As a part of Art In Unusual Spaces, The Travelling Gallery has been exhibited and documented in a empty shop-front window, situated at Leeds Shopping Plaza.
The Travelling Gallery was a collective performance across the city by Leeds-based artist group Woolgather, on Light Night 2009.Each of the 11 members of Woolgather used the plinth - the structure upon which artworks are conventionally displayed - as a point of departure. The group took this humble and often overlooked piece of gallery furniture and re-imagined its potential as an artwork, bringing it to new environments and audiences. The installation in Leeds Shopping Plaza shows the props and plinths used in the nightlong performance alongside photographic and video documentation. Works include a fact-machine costume, a diminishing oversized cornflake cake and a Russian doll plinth set.
'This has been an awesome opportunity for us to finalize the Travelling Gallery. The plinths were bashed around and began to fall apart, but now they have been tidied up and put to rest, along with documentation of the night. This is a fantastic way of observing Art In Unusual Spaces, an art piece moving from location to location!' |
